Often people attempt to live their lives backwards; they try
to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want, so
they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. You must first
be who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you
want.
This is my "depressed stance." When you’re
depressed, it makes a lot of difference how you stand. The worst thing you can
do is straighten up and hold your head high because then you’ll start to feel
better. If you’re going to get any joy out of being depressed, you’ve got to
stand like this.
I myself have never been able to find out precisely what
feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express
sentiments that differentiate me from a door mat or a prostitute.
I, with a deeper instinct, choose a man who compels my
strength, who makes enormous demands on me, who does not doubt my courage or my
toughness, who does not believe me naïve or innocent, who has the courage to
treat me like a woman.
When I see the elaborate study and ingenuity displayed by
women in the pursuit of trifles, I feel no doubt of their capacity for the most
herculean undertakings.
